Sosei River ParkSapporo city, Hokkaido

Sosei River Park is situated at the eastern edge of downtown Sapporo and 8 block long north and south along the Sosei River. The river is actually a man-made canal and used to be the main route to bring construction materials into Sapporo by boat when the city was opened in the end of the 19th century. The area was the center of the city in those days, but as trains and trucks replaced boats, the importance of the river gradually decreased and the center of the city also moved to the west, where Sapporo station is nearby.

The Sosei River was deserted and became an inaccessible space due to its rapid stream and over-grown willow trees. At this point, the river was regarded as nothing but a physical barrier to block the growth of the city to the east beyond. The city wanted to revitalize the river and turn it to a more user-friendly, lively space, and held a design competition in 2005.

D+M participated in the competition and proposed various open spaces along the river where visitors from either side of the city can easily approach. It also proposed reconstruction of historic remnants including the Sosei Bridge and the original milestone. The riverbed was proposed to be accessible by installing a large duct pipe underground for the main flow, by which the surface water can be kept consistent and calm.

D+M was selected in the competition and undertook design development and prepared construction documents. The park was completed in 2011 and soon became a new landmark of Sapporo city. It is now visited and used frequently by citizens and visitors as a precious urban water park as well as a unique facility to tell us the history of Sapporo.
