Obihiro Station Land Readjustment ProjectObihiro city, Hokkaido

Obihiro is the fourth largest city in Hokkaido and characterized by its proximity to great nature with four large national parks nearby. A large-scale land readjustment project took place on both north and south side of Obihiro station in the 90s, which was undertaken simultaneously with the grade separation project of JR Nemuro line.

D+M was responsible for preparing a landscape master plan first and later requested to design station plazas (N-S), streets around the station, Obihiro Minami Park, and landscape furniture within the project area.

The city wanted to make this project a trigger to revitalize downtown. In response to this, D+M set a design concept, “Attractive gate-way city to nature” and proposed to use water features and plant materials effectively to attract people to downtown.

D+M designed public spaces with symbolic water features and affluent greenery where citizens and visitors can gather and spend time. Plant materials were carefully selected to increase ecological value of the project site by attracting small animals and wild birds.

D+M won Japan City Planning Society Award in 1996 and Japan Good Design Award in 2002 with this project.
